Rohil Basmai Trek

Rohil Basmai Trek

Rohil Basmai Trek

The Rohil Basmai Valley Trek is yet another revelation. The route is versatile since it unveils something unexpected at every juncture. One moment you’re trekking up a section littered with boulders and suddenly an alpine lake emerges out of the blue, with glacier-filled mountain peaks as its backdrop.

Day 1: Trek from Pahalgam to Aru to Lidderwat

Altitude: 7958 feet to 9131 feet Distance: 10 kms Time taken: 6 hours Trail type: Gently climbing long trail It is a gentle but long climb from Aru to Lidderwat covering a distance of 10 km in 6 hours. The trail to Lidderwat starts to climb straight out of the village, following the course of the Lidder River. Follow the wide trail past the agricultural department’s fence. Look back to take a commanding view of the entire region of Aru. The trail gets into a cluster of fir trees and continues to climb. Half an hour later, the trail pops out at a clearing called Dalla near Gujjar huts. Out of the pine trees, the trail gently climbs a mound, from the top of which is one of the most fascinating sceneries of the day. The Lidder River meets with the trail at the valley bottom, spreading out in springs. Next to the river are grassy glades where the trail runs. Beyond, the Lidder rushes out of a curve around more gorgeous fir forests. It takes about half hour to cross this lovely section of the trail and enter the cluster of firs once again. Across the forest and ten minutes later, are the superb meadows of Lidderwat. There are a few Gujjar huts that signal Lidderwat. A sensible option is to drop down to the wooden bridge, climb out of the meadows on the other side and camp anywhere. On the other side are lovely clear streams running across the meadows – this is vitally important if you are camping for the night. Pahalgam District Authority huts for accommodation. There are also plenty of places to pitch camp. The Lidderwat camping site is a dream. Clear streams run across the meadows. Spare time to take long walks that stretch to either ends of the meadows.

Day 2 Trek from Lidderwat to Satlunjan

Altitude: 9,131 feet to 10,500 feet Distance: 5 kms Time taken: 4.5 hours Trail type: Plain walk with intermittent moderate climbs. Last patch is a steep climb From Khalan to Satlunjan, the 1.5 hour journey is characterized by boulders. The trail also winds along the river. Satlunjan is a big Gujjar village, which houses 15 huts. Satlunjan literally translates to ‘Seven Bridges’, which denotes the 7 bridges to cross 7 mountain streams. From Satlunjan (10,700 feet), the climb towards Rohil Valley is steep. It usually takes an hour to reach the top of the valley, which has a few more Gujjar huts. Camp here for the night.

Day 3 Trek from Satlunjan to Sonasar Lake (Basmai)

Altitude: 10,500 feet to 12,457 feet Distance: 4.5 kms Time taken: 5 hours Trail type: Boulders, grasslands, mountain streams and alpine lakes From the river, it’s a gentle climb from the right side of the river until you reach the boulder patch. Cross over to the other side of the river. Post your crossover, it’s a moderate climb all the way to Sonasar. The alpine lake emerges as a surprise element. The banks of this tranquil beauty will be your campsite for the night.

Day 4 Trek from Sonasar Lake to Handilsar Lake

Altitude: 12,457 feet to 12,103 feet Distance: 7.5 kms Time taken: 6 hours Trail type: Grasslands, mountain streams, boulders, snow patches and alpine lakes This is a good spot to take a breather. From Tsangar, it’s a moderate climb for one hour to reach Handilsar lake. Camp here for the night. Camping near an alpine lake is an experience unlike any other. The night sky is overwhelmingly beautiful.

Day 5 Trek from Handilsar Lake to Rohil Top; trek back to Satlunjan

Altitude: 12,103 feet to 13,000 feet; Descend from 13,000 feet to 10,700 feet Distance: 6.5 kms Time taken: 6 hours Trail type: Meadows, boulders and alpine lake It’s a moderate climb again to Rohil Top via Hapatsar Lake. It’s a 45 minute mild hike to the lake, which is at an altitude of 12,800 feet. Above Hapatsar, the snow patches are bountiful. They feed this alpine lake. The climb to Rohil Top is moderate and it’s the highest altitude of the trek at 13,000 feet. The views from the top ar spellbinding. The Rohil Nala flows to the left side of the trail. The Rohil valley is narrow in comparison to the Basmai Valley but beautiful nonetheless. Spend a good one hour at the top and take in the sceneries. Retrace your steps to Satlunjan lower campsite. Camp at Satlunjan for the night.

Day 6 Trek from Satlunjan to Aru to Pahalgam

Altitude: 10,700 feet to 7958 Distance: 14 kms Time taken: 6 hours Trail type: Grasslands and mountain streams Today is a longest day of the entire trek. However, the trail does not pose too many challenges. You will be trekking along lush grasslands that wind through broad-open valleys covered with trees. The route is blessed with mountain streams, which is always a relief. The milky white stream water is fresh and rejuvenating. It’s important that you take short five-minute breaks and hydrate yourself well today. You will be losing an altitude of 2492 feet within a single day and that can be tricky if you don’t pace yourself well. Predominantly, it is a gentle climb. If you get off to an early start, you will reach Aru no later than

Sheeshnag Lake Trek

Sheeshnag Lake Trek

Sheeshnag lake trek

Nestled at an altitude of 3590 meters above sea level, Sheshnag Lake is an oligotrophic lake (water body that has low content of algal production and thus has clear water of high-drinking quality) that is home to several species of fish including the brown trout. The lake appears greenish in colour because of its lush green meadows that surrounds it making it a breathtaking beauty to admire. With a measurement of 1.1 km in length and 0.7 km wide, the lake is considered as one of the most beautiful sights of Jammu and Kashmir tourism. Sheshnag Lake is mainly fed by the streams and snow mountains above it and it usually freezes in winter. Along with its scientific importance, the lake has special significance for Hindu followers as well. Though there are various mythological stories related to the lake but the most commonly believed one is that Sheshnag Lake basically belongs to Sheshnag, the Lord of Snakes, and is said to be dug by the Lord himself. And because of its presence on the route to holy Amarnath Cave, Sheshnag Lake is also a sacred pilgrimage site. Travellers can easily trek this must visit Pahalgam tourist place from Chandanwadi Valley, which is only about 7 miles away. It is best to visit this lake between June and September, when it is easily accessible and at its scenic best.

Day 1: Pahalgam – Chandanwari – Zojibal

We start our day tour from Pahalgam to Chandanwari early in the morning heading towards Sheshnag Lake. During the trek, the trail passes through some of the most beautiful forests of maple and pine along Lidder River. After a 9-10 km walk up soft slopes, the trail enters the beautiful valley of Chandanwari. . You may stop to have lunch in between the green mountains. Then starting again, the trail ascends initially for few kilometers to Pissu Top (11,000 feet) from where you get breathtaking views all around. Zojibal is 5 kms away from Pissutop .It is straight rocky walk from Pissutop. Overnight stay at Zojibal.

Day 2: Zojibal – Nagakoti – Sheeshnag

Distance between Zojibal and Nagakoti is around 2KM and have moderate climb. Altitude increases by 300 feet in these 2 Kms. There are some beautiful mountains streams between these points. We covered this short distance in more than one hour courtesy some photo session. Some part of this 2KM distance is very narrow and Yatris are not allowed to travel on ponies. They have to walk through this narrow path. After Nagakoti our next and last destination for today was the Sheshnag Lake. Sheshnag Lake is the origin of beautiful East Lidder River. From Nagkoti, Sheshnag yatra camp is at 2 kms away and just after 1KM you can enjoy the breathtaking views of this charming lake. After the first glimpse of the lake, you will forget all tiredness of the journey. The first scene of the lake is small light blue colored water appearing between two small hills and a small stream flowing through the gap between those two hills. Overnight stay at Sheshnag.

Day 3: Sheshnag Lake – Chandanwari – Pahalgam

After spending the night at the shores of the lake, it is time to head back to Pahalgam. Follow the same trail to Chandanwari for about 4 hours. The trail passes Pissu Top and a spectacular, primeval countryside. Pahalgam Sonmarg Trek

Pahalgam Sonmarg Trek

Pahalgam Sonmarg Trek

It has terrific similarity with the Kashmir Great Lakes trek: superb meadows, wide open plains, impressive lakes, grand mountain views, but with one very big difference. The Tarsar Marsar trek has lot more variety. There are valleys that are flower-decked with such density that it takes careful stepping not to trample on flowers. There are streams that fall on ledges, creating shallow swimming pools that are surrounded by grassy knolls. The camp sites are in terrific settings. The Tarsar Marsar trek is a new experience of what beauty on a trek can be..

Day 1: Aru to Lidderwat

It is a gentle, but long climb from Aru to Lidderwat You will cover a distance of 10 km in 6 hours with an altitude gain of 342 m Look out for two clear streams and a wooden bridge half hour before Lidderwat You will pass through Nandkei which is a cluster of Gujjar settlements across the Lidder river Once you reach Lidderwat, you can explore the meadows and the clear streams that run through it. It is an absolutely delightful experience. Camp for the night at Lidderwat.

Day 2:Lidderwat to Shekwas

Gain an altitude of 480 m in 5 hours as you climb to Shekwas covering a distance of 6 km The trail is mostly ascending with intermediate flat grounds and one river crossing en route After passing through pine forests and some intermittent clearings you will reach wide sweeping grasslands that are formed from the merger of many valleys that converge here. The trail climbs swiftly past a few Gujjar huts to the camping grounds of Shekhwas Camp for the night at Shekhwas.

Day 3: Shekwas to Tarsar

It is a gentle climb to Tarsar through tall grasses, a few ridges and finally to the shore of the lake. Tarsar is 5 km above Shekhwas and takes 4 hours with an altitude gain of 518 metres. The turquoise blue water is surrounded by lush meadows and snow capped peaks – this campsite is truly heaven on earth. Camp at Tarsar and move to Sundarsar the next morning.

Day 4: Tarsar to Sundersar, optional visit to Marsar

The trek to Sundersar covers a distance of 5 km in 5 hours with a pass crossing. Some trekkers attempt a trek to Marsar, which is a closed lake set inside a cauldron with steep sides. The trail is a steep ascent in the beginning, followed by a descent and then a final gentle ascent to Sundarsar Sundarsar lake is not as large as Tarsar. Yet, the setting of the lake is just as beautiful. Around the lake are long grassy stretches with little sprouting flowers of yellow, blue and white. Sundarsar has big, flat streches that is a perfect camping spot.

Day 5: Visit Marsar, and get down to Sonamasti

The trail initially is a climb to Marsar, which is at an altitude of 13,170 feet. Explore the surrounding meadows, and finally descend to 11,000 feet. The trek covers a distance of approximately 8 km in 6 hours. The Sonamasti valley is a sharp drop of over 2,000 feet, over a series of grassy ledges. Each of these ledges has a little stream that runs down from snow melts and falls down to the ledge below forming a clear pond, before sliding off the cliff as a waterfall. The Sonamasti valley floor, again, is a breathtaking piece of nature’s art with small streams, brooks and green pastures. Camp for the night at Sonamasti.

Day 6: Sonamasti to Sumbal Sonamarg

Descend 4500 feet, and 11 km from Sonamasti to Sumbal. An early start will get you to Sumbal is about 5 hours. From Sumbal to Sonamarg. The trek ends at Sonmarg.
